Domaine Matassa

Domaine Matassa

One of the most original and atypical domains in the South of France, the Domaine Matassa, both in terms of its history and its wines. Matassa was founded by Tom Lubbe and his wife Nathalie, who are from New Zealand. Having gained experience in South Africa at the Welgemeend estate, it was in the late 90s/early 2000s that Tom did an internship at Gerard Gauby's estate and settled in Calce in 2001. The estate now covers more than 15 hectares of small plots of old vines where Tom produces delicate wines using biodynamic methods, without chemical additives. He likes to harvest early to keep alcohol levels low and thus produce wines with a beautiful freshness and great intensity. In contrast to his neighbors' wines with firm tannins and a lot of substance, Tom's wines are delicate, with infusions of grenache, carignan... on a potpourri of rose, peony, and gentle spices, framed by a basket of tangy red fruits. The tannins are insolently delicate, and one could drink them in abundance as the wines are juicy, delicate, and thirst-quenching.
