Experienced winemaker, Frédéric Pourtalié produced his first vintage in 1999 and immediately found success with his charming and profound cuvées for the Domaine de Montcalmes. Located between Puéchabon, Aniane, Saint-Jean-de-Fos, and Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian, the vineyard (35 hectares of family-owned vines) is planted with syrah and grenache on a north-facing limestone plateau, as well as mourvèdre on a terroir of rolled pebbles reminiscent of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The fine tannins are a result of aging in barrels for 24 months in a humid cellar dug by this ingenious winemaker. The wines then rest for an additional year in tanks and bottles. Three harvests thus mature underground, a rather rare practice that has become the hallmark of this renowned estate. RVF
